What is hardcoat anodizing?

Anodizing is an electrochemical process that forms a non-conductive anodic oxide layer on the surface of non-ferrous metals, especially aluminum. This process significantly improves the durability, decorativeness and corrosion resistance of aluminum, making it widely used in finished parts across a variety of manufacturing industries. Hardcoat anodizing not only enhances the material's performance, but also provides a variety of color and surface treatment options to meet the needs of different applications.

Hard anodizing, also known as hard coat anodizing, is a specific form of aluminum anodizing. The process forms a dense aluminum oxide anodic coating on the metal surface through electrolysis, further refining the aluminum material.

During the hard anodizing process, the base aluminum material and the anodic coating are tightly bonded to form a high-strength bond with a thicker surface. This enhanced bonding force makes the coating significantly improved in wear resistance, corrosion resistance and overall strength, and is widely used in fields that require high-performance materials, such as aerospace, automotive and electronic equipment.

In addition, aluminum hard coating anodizing improves specific properties of treated aluminum materials, which are applicable in many industries. They include wear and corrosion resistance, surface hardness, thermal and electrical insulation, gliding properties and aesthetic qualities.

Hard Coat vs. Regular Anodize of Aluminum: What's the difference?

Generally, aluminum anodizing comprises three types. They are:

Type I is chromic acid anodize
Type II is the conventional sulfuric acid anodize
Type III is the hard coat anodize

So, what are the differences between the hard coat anodize and the regular anodize of aluminum?
Check the differences below:

1. Thickness

The thickness of the aluminum layer of hardcoat anodizing is significantly higher than that of ordinary anodized aluminum. This thicker surface makes hardcoat anodized aluminum have better corrosion and wear resistance.
Specifically, the thickness of Type III hardcoat anodizing ranges from 13 to 150 microns. In contrast, Type I anodized aluminum has a thinner coating of approximately 2.54 microns, while Type II anodized aluminum has a thickness between 5.08 and 15.24 microns. This difference in thickness makes different types of anodized aluminum have different performance in the application.

2. Sealing
Usually, hard anodized aluminum cannot be sealed due to its thick surface. This increases the durability and wear resistance of hard anodized coatings. Therefore, the need for sealants is reduced during the technical application of hard coat anodizing.
In contrast, regular aluminum anodes undergo sealing to close the pores during the conversion to aluminum oxide. Therefore, this sealing process gives standard anodizers a strong anti-corrosion protective coating. In addition, the durability and wear resistance of regular anodized coatings are not as good as those of hard anodizing. Therefore, this makes them suitable
