Anodizing Types
While there are some specialized anodizing types available for more niche purposes (i.e., phosphoric acid or titanium), there are three main types of anodizing that are chosen based on the application, material, and desired end result:
Type I
• Electrolyte: Chromic acid
• Layer thickness: 0.00002 to 0.0001 inches (0.5 to 2.5 microns)
• Properties: Good adhesion, non-conductive, electrically insulating, minimal dimensional impact, compatible with complex shapes
• Applications: Adhesive applications, paint and coating primers, aerospace components, weldments
Chromic acid anodizing forms the thinnest of the three oxide layers, but if properly sealed, it provides the same corrosion resistance as the other two. This coating absorbs less dye, typically resulting in a gray appearance, limiting its use in decorative applications.
However, chromic acid anodizing can be dyed black, making it ideal for optical component housings requiring both protection and light absorption. This characteristic makes chromic acid anodizing valuable in certain high-performance and specialized applications.

Type II
• Electrolyte: Sulfuric acid
• Layer thickness: 0.0002 to 0.001 inches (5 to 25 microns)
• Properties: Highly porous, hard, wear- and corrosion-resistant, more affordable, compatible with a wider range of aluminum alloys
• Applications: Optical and electronic components, hydraulic valve bodies, electronic and computer housings
Sulfuric acid anodizing is the most widely used type of anodizing. It produces a harder coating than chromic acid anodizing and is more economical than the other two methods because it requires less energy, time, and chemicals. Furthermore, waste disposal from sulfuric acid anodizing is simpler and less expensive than that from chromic acid anodizing.
The porous layer of sulfuric acid anodizing effectively absorbs dyes before sealing, offering a wide variety of color shades. For frequently used applications, sealing after dyeing can minimize color fading, but it should be noted that this treatment does not completely prevent fading over time. The final look is clear and natural, making it an excellent base for dyeing, but it can also be left uncolored.
