Black anodizing and black oxide coatings are a hot debate among manufacturers, but which is better? Let’s take a look at both processes.

 

Black oxide coating, also known as blackening, is ideal for coating iron, stainless steel, copper-based alloys, copper, zinc, and silver solder. It provides metals with mild corrosion resistance, minimizes light reflection, and enhances aesthetics. Unlike black anodizing, black oxide is coated on the surface of the material during a chemical conversion process.

There are three main methods for black oxide coating, depending on the temperature used: heat treatment, medium temperature treatment, and cold treatment. Each of these methods is suitable for different metals and application needs.
