Explore autonomous machining solutions for PEEK plastic with top-tier machining vendors.

As industries demand higher-performance polymer components, machining PEEK plastic has become critical for aerospace, medical, and automotive applications.

autonomous machining
PEEK is a widely used thermoplastic polymer, commonly used in products as diverse as medical implants and cable insulation. Its excellent mechanical properties and high corrosion resistance make it an ideal choice for manufacturers worldwide. While PEEK is commonly used in injection molding and 3D printing, its high melting point also makes it suitable for subtractive processes such as CNC machining. However, PEEK processing presents its own unique set of challenges.

What is PEEK (polyether ether ketone)?

PEEK (polyetheretherketone) is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic belonging to the PAEK family of materials. This semi-crystalline material is widely used in industrial components, offering excellent strength, wear resistance, and heat resistance, maintaining its properties even in high-temperature environments. With a melting point of 343°C, PEEK can be used at higher temperatures: it can operate continuously at 250°C and even in hot water or steam without permanent loss of physical properties.

High-performance PEEK plastic is commonly available in pellet form, filament for 3D printing, and rods for CNC machining. It is generally available in industrial and medical grades.

The advantages of processing PEEK can be divided into two categories: the inherent material advantages of PEEK and the specific process advantages of using CNC machine tools to process PEEK materials.

Material advantages for processing PEEK include:
• Excellent chemical resistance
• Very low moisture absorption
• Abrasion and wear resistance
• Unaffected by continuous hot water/steam exposure
• Biocompatibility in some grades
• Resistance to biodegradation

• High precision
• High repeatability
• Tight tolerances
Relatively high melting point allows for faster feeds and speeds

PEEK machining, PEEK 3D printing, or PEEK injection molding?

PEEK is not limited to CNC machining; it can also be processed through additive manufacturing or injection molding. The choice of processing method depends on the desired end product, as well as time and budget constraints.

For 3D printing PEEK, both FFF filaments and SLS powders are available. However, PEEK's availability in CNC machining and injection molding remains significantly higher than additive manufacturing options. 3D printing is becoming increasingly popular in biocompatible medical implant applications due to its ability to easily achieve complex (partially hollow) geometries.

Injection molding PEEK resin is widely used in fields such as medical and aerospace. However, because its melting point is at the upper limit of the capabilities of many injection molding machines, it may be considered a specialty material.
