Stainless Steel CNC Machining
Stainless steel is a widely used metal that is essential to a variety of industries, from medical to power generation. Its main value lies in its strength, heat resistance, and excellent corrosion resistance. In fact, corrosion resistance is the main difference between stainless steel and ordinary steel. In the Hongsinn Live Quote Engine℠, you can choose from a variety of stainless steel materials for CNC machining.
About Stainless Steel for CNC Machining
The main difference between stainless steel and ordinary steel is the presence of chromium in its alloy. All stainless steels contain at least 10.5% chromium in their chemical composition. The addition of chromium makes stainless steel more corrosion resistant. Different grades of stainless steel also contain different alloying elements to further improve corrosion resistance, heat treatment performance and machinability. It should be noted that the heat treatment process can significantly affect the mechanical properties of the metal.
Stainless steels can be classified based on their crystalline structure. This includes Austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, and duplex:
Austenitic stainless steels, such as the 300 series and 200 series stainless steels, are highly formable and are not work hardened. They are also nonmagnetic in the annealed condition.
Ferritic stainless steels are magnetic and have better thermal conductivity than austenitic stainless steels. They cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
• Martensitic stainless steels, such as grades 416 and 420 can be hardened by a variety of aging or heat treatment methods.
Duplex stainless steel, also known as austenitic-ferritic, is a highly specialized grade of stainless steel for improved corrosion resistance. Duplex steels are typical in industrial and building structures.

Stainless Steel 15-5
Stainless Steel 15-5 is a precipitation hardened (PH) metal, a process that gives it excellent toughness, strength and corrosion resistance. Its mechanical properties can be further improved by low temperature heat treatment, making this material ideal for aerospace and nuclear applications.
Stainless Steel 17-4
17-4 stainless steel has better corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures than 15-5 stainless steel. This enhanced corrosion resistance is achieved by sacrificing some mechanical strength. 17-4 is also one of the most widely used grades of precipitation hardening (PH) stainless steels, with applications including chemical processing parts and gas turbines.
Stainless Steel 18-8
Stainless Steel 18-8 has an austenitic crystal structure and is one of the most widely used grades. It is often referred to as 304 stainless steel or SS304, although Hongsinn also quotes 18-8 as SS304, the two differ slightly in certain alloying elements. 18-8 stainless steel has good corrosion resistance properties and is often used to make fasteners and pressure pipes.
Stainless Steel 303
Stainless Steel 303 is made easier to machine than SS304 by adding sulfur to the alloying elements. However, this addition also reduces the corrosion resistance of the alloy. 303 stainless steel is well suited for projects that require heavy-duty machining, such as gears and shafts.

304 Stainless Steel
304 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel with good corrosion resistance and is widely used in fasteners. It is often seen as a low-cost alternative to SS316, but does not have the same corrosion resistance. 304 stainless steel is very similar to 18-8 grade stainless steel due to the same amount of chromium and nickel. However, due to the higher amount of carbon in the alloy, 304 stainless steel has higher strength.
316 Stainless Steel
316 stainless steel is an austenitic grade of stainless steel that contains molybdenum, giving it excellent corrosion resistance. In addition, it is highly formable and weldable. Its applications include chemical containers and boat fittings. The low carbon version, 316L, performs better in chloride resistance than the basic formula.
416 Stainless Steel
416 stainless steel is one of the most easily machined stainless steels. This improved machinability comes at the expense of corrosion resistance compared to other alloys, so it generally rusts more easily than other stainless steels. Applications for 416 stainless steel include motor shafts and gears. Its raw material is generally soft and easy to machine in the machine annealed condition, and can be heat treated to increase hardness and strength.
Stainless Steel 420
Stainless Steel 420 is a martensitic stainless steel with a higher carbon content and lower chromium content. Due to the lower chromium content, its corrosion resistance is weaker. However, in the annealed condition, its mechanical properties are improved, making it still valuable in specific applications.
Stainless Steel 440C
Stainless Steel 440C is the alloy with the highest carbon content in the 400 series. This makes 440C less corrosion resistant, but it has excellent hardness properties (which can be further improved by heat treatment) and mechanical strength. Typical applications include bearing housings and surgical instruments.
Stainless Steel 410
Stainless Steel 410 is the most versatile steel in the 400 series and has a lower carbon content, which provides better corrosion resistance. Like other martensitic steels, 410 stainless steel can be hardened to achieve excellent mechanical strength. It is often used to make cutlery, fasteners, and machine parts.
