What is nylon and what are its material properties?

Nylon, also known as polyamide (PA), is a synthetic polymer with high tensile strength, excellent wear resistance and a low coefficient of friction. Here are its uses in manufacturing and engineering applications.

How is nylon made?

Nylon is made by polymerizing adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine. These raw materials are combined into nylon salt and then heated to produce nylon polymer.

The polymer is then melted and extruded through a spinneret, solidifying into long strands. These strands are pulled to give them strength and elasticity. When the material cools, its fibers solidify and the material is ready to use.

What post-processing techniques are commonly used with nylon?

Several post-processing techniques are frequently used on nylon to improve part performance and achieve specific characteristics. Some common post-processing techniques for nylon include the following.

Annealing is a common heat treatment process that is often used to eliminate internal stress in nylon parts. This process can improve dimensional stability, reduce warping, and enhance overall mechanical properties. With proper annealing, nylon parts can show better durability and reliability during use.

Surface Treatment. Plasma treatment, chemical treatment and steam smoothing can be used to modify the surface characteristics of nylon, enhancing the adhesion of coatings, paints or adhesives.

Machining and Finishing. CNC milling, turning, and grinding can be used to obtain precise dimensions and smooth surfaces on nylon parts.

Nylon parts can be dyed or colored to achieve desired visual effects while also adding an extra layer of protection from UV radiation and other environmental factors.
