What are the Different Precision Machining Methods and Equipment?

Due to the wide application of this process, a variety of machines and equipment have appeared on the market for precision machining. Different parts require different cutting methods, so a series of specialized cutting tools have been developed. The diversity of these tools ensures that the best processing results can be achieved under various processing conditions.

CNC Milling Machines

CNC milling is a subtractive manufacturing process that removes material from a workpiece by rotating a milling cutter. The direction, angle, pressure, and tool speed can be adjusted during operation to achieve different cutting results. CNC milling machines come in many variations, including bed-type, box-type, C-frame, floor-type, gantry-type, horizontal boring mill, knee-type, planer-type, turret-type, and punch-type milling machines.

CNC Turning

In CNC turning, the workpiece rotates around a central axis and a tool moving in a straight line is responsible for removing material from the workpiece. Unlike CNC milling machines, the cutting tools are usually non-rotating. The most commonly used cutting tools are single-point cutting tools, which are effective in achieving high precision and good surface quality during machining.

Precision Grinding Machine

Precision grinding is one of the last processes in part machining. During precision grinding, an abrasive grinder (or grinding wheel) creates a very smooth, perfectly flat surface on the part being machined. Precision grinding also helps achieve tight tolerances on the finished product by removing small amounts of excess material, thereby improving the overall accuracy and quality of the product.

CNC drilling machine

During the CNC drilling process, the workpiece remains stationary while the rotating drill moves on the workpiece and forms holes. These holes can not only be used for the assembly of parts, but also improve the aesthetics. CNC drilling machines can make holes of various specifications by replacing drill bits of different sizes, and the depth of the hole can also be adjusted by controlling the calibration of the machine tool to meet processing needs.

Multi-axis CNC machining

Multi-axis CNC machining is a comprehensive machining system that allows the tool to move in four or more directions. This machining method allows the use of multiple cutting tools and processes, such as milling, water jet cutting or laser cutting, to create complex part shapes. The flexibility and precision of multi-axis CNC machining make it an important choice for manufacturing high-precision parts.

Electrical Discharge Machining

In electrical discharge machining (EDM), metal is shaped by electrical discharges (sparks). Other names for this process include spark machining, die cutting, wire erosion, wire burning, or spark erosion. EDM is primarily used on metal materials because they are conductive. The process uses two electrodes - a tool electrode and a workpiece electrode - that are brought close to each other during machining, but do not actually touch, allowing for high-precision metal removal.

In EDM, an electric arc between electrodes raises the temperature of the tool electrode and melts the metal on the workpiece. This machining method is particularly suitable for the hardest metals, as these materials are usually very difficult to machine using traditional milling machines. EDM is often used to make holes, slots and tapers on gears, and can achieve complex shapes and high-precision machining requirements.

Swiss machining

Swiss machining is an improvement on traditional lathes, using specialized Swiss-made CNC lathes for efficient and precise part machining. In traditional lathes, the headstock is fixed and only used to rotate the workpiece. In Swiss machining, the headstock has the ability to move linearly, which makes the machining process more flexible and enables more precise and complex machining options. This technology is particularly suitable for the production of small batches and high-precision parts.

In addition to the moving headstock, Swiss machining also uses a sliding guide sleeve that moves along the longitudinal axis of the workpiece. The guide sleeve provides support for the workpiece, ensuring that it remains stable during the machining process. This design greatly improves the accuracy and consistency of machining, especially for the production of small diameter and high-precision parts. In this way, Swiss machining can meet strict tolerance requirements while improving machining efficiency.

CNC laser machine tools

CNC laser processing uses high-frequency laser beams to cut or engrave various materials. Unlike EDM, which mainly targets metals, laser processing can effectively process non-metallic materials such as wood, plastic and paper. This processing method has the advantages of high precision, fast cutting speed and small heat-affected zone, making it widely used in various fields in modern manufacturing.

CNC Mill Turning Center

CNC Mill Turning Center (or CNC Mill Turning Machine) combines milling and turning operations together, breaking the traditional pattern of these two processes being completed separately on different machines. Combining them into one machine not only simplifies the manufacturing process, but also improves machining efficiency. At 3ERP, our CNC turning services utilize advanced milling technology to efficiently produce complex parts with high precision and shortened lead times. This versatile equipment allows us to be more flexible in meeting customer needs.CNC mill-turn centers are available in two configurations – vertical and horizontal. The vertical configuration is considered more stable due to the effect of gravity on the setup.
