Types of Titanium Alloys: Grades, Properties, and Uses
Titanium is a metal that is in growing demand due to its excellent corrosion resistance and a wide range of desirable mechanical properties. To take advantage of titanium's unique qualities, manufacturers often add small amounts of other elements to pure titanium to modify its physical properties. These modifications can increase titanium's strength, hardness, and toughness, allowing it to be used in a wide range of applications, including aerospace, medical devices, and chemicals.
Therefore, there are various types of titanium alloys available in the market as they vary in performance and cost. In this article, we will explore the different classifications of titanium alloys and their respective application areas.
Structural Classification of Titanium Alloys
Microstructure is one way to classify titanium alloys. The structural properties of these titanium alloys depend on their alloy composition and the processes used during their manufacturing.
Alpha alloys
Alpha alloys are special titanium alloys that are mainly combined with the element of oxygen alloy. Although other components such as carbon and iron may be present as impurities, their content is relatively small. Oxygen, as an interstitial alloying element, can significantly increase the strength of the alloy, but at the same time reduce its plasticity. The chemical and engineering industries are the main application areas of alpha alloys.
In these fields, good corrosion properties and deformability are usually more important than high strength. The main difference between commercially pure titanium (CP) grades is their oxygen concentration.

Near-Alpha Alloys
Near-alpha alloys of titanium are the most common high-temperature alloys. This class of alloys is suitable for high-temperature environments because they combine the superior creep properties of alpha alloys with the high strength of alpha + beta alloys. However, their maximum operating temperature is currently limited to 500 to 550ºC. This makes near-alpha alloys very popular in aerospace and high-temperature engineering applications.
Beta and Near-Beta Alloys
Beta and near-beta alloys are another type of titanium material. The manufacturing process of this type of alloy involves adding sufficient stabilizing elements to titanium. Although these materials have been around for many years, they have only recently gained attention. Compared to alpha-beta alloys, beta alloys are easier to cold work and can be heat treated to achieve higher strength. In addition, some beta alloys are even better than commercial pure titanium grades in terms of corrosion resistance.
Alpha and Beta Alloys
Alpha and beta alloys are generally medium to high strength materials with tensile strengths ranging from 620 to 1250 MPa and creep resistance between 350 and 400°C. In addition to excellent tensile properties, these alloys also exhibit low cycle fatigue and high cycle fracture toughness characteristics, making them ideal for applications requiring high performance.
Therefore, thermomechanical and heat treatment processes have been developed to ensure that the alloys provide the best balance of mechanical properties for a variety of applications.
