Is Stainless Steel Difficult to Machine?

When machining stainless steel, there are challenges that do arise. These challenges are common to many machining processes. However, by taking the proper precautions, problems that arise when machining stainless steel can be effectively avoided.

The main problem is usually caused by overheating of the steel surface, which is common in any machining process. In the case of stainless steel alloys, overheating can damage the material's corrosion resistance. However, by monitoring the workpiece temperature, overheating can be effectively avoided. In addition, when stainless steel is heated, its surface will show different colors.

This heat reaction is closely related to the pickling process. Pickling is the process of treating stainless steel with hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid, which can effectively dissolve the oxide layer on the surface of the steel, thereby restoring the corrosion resistance of the alloy. Through pickling, the surface of stainless steel can be cleaned and regenerated, improving its overall performance.

Problems in Machining Stainless Steel

Some of the minor difficulties that arise when machining stainless steel are:
• Stainless steel causes high tool wear, reducing tool life.
• High forces are required to provide the desired results.
• Machining operations in stainless steel have poor chip control.
• The hardness of some stainless steels is particularly high.

Difficult-to-machine stainless steel types

All steels present certain challenges during machining. However, some stainless steels are more difficult to machine than others. Here are some difficult-to-machine stainless steels and their associated problems:

High Carbon Steels

High carbon steels present challenges when machining due to their extreme strength and hardness. Additionally, these steels contain carbide grades that make machining even more difficult. These factors quickly wear out machining tools, making machining more difficult and expensive.

Mild steel

Mild steel also faces difficulties during machining. This is due to its high flexibility, which causes steel chips to adhere to the tool, thus affecting cutting efficiency. In addition, this phenomenon shortens the tool life and increases machining costs.

316 Stainless Steel

316 stainless steel has one of the worst machinability grades. It requires specialized cutting tools to machine it. Therefore, 316 stainless steel is used when no other choice will work on the part.

304 Stainless Steel

The main problem faced by 304 stainless steel during machining is work hardening. This material tends to harden quickly during cutting, increasing the difficulty of machining. To solve this problem, its machinability can be improved by adding sulfur to the workpiece, thereby reducing the impact of work hardening.
