CNC Machining Brass

Brass is a widely used copper-zinc alloy that varies in composition depending on the zinc content as well as other elements such as lead, aluminum, and iron. Due to its copper content, brass has excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, while also having good wear resistance. The addition of lead enhances its machinability, making brass one of the easiest materials to machine of all copper alloys. In Hongsinn's Live Quote Engine℠, you can select brass for CNC machining.

Brass is a versatile copper alloy that retains some of the advantages of copper while improving many of its properties. It has high mechanical strength and a low coefficient of friction, and is more corrosion and wear resistant than ordinary copper. These properties make CNC machined brass very suitable for mechanical applications that require corrosion resistance, such as various mechanical equipment in the marine industry.

Copper Cartridge (Copper C260)

Copper C260 is a copper-zinc alloy containing approximately 30% zinc, with less than 1% lead and less than 1% iron each. This material is sometimes called cartridge brass, named for its historical use in cartridges. In addition to its use in cartridges, Copper C260 is widely used in components such as rivets, hinges, and radiator cores.

Free Cutting Brass (Copper C360)

Copper C360, also known as free cutting brass, has excellent machinability due to its relatively high lead content. This material is widely used in applications such as manufacturing gears, screw machine parts and valve components due to its ability to achieve precise cutting and excellent surface quality during machining.

Finish and Post-treatment Options

Similar to stainless steel or copper, brass does not typically require coating due to its inherent conductivity, corrosion resistance, and low coefficient of friction. However, if the application involves cosmetics or some degree of exposure to the environment, a clear coat may be considered. Listed below are some useful surface treatment options for CNC machined brass:

Hand Polishing, Buffing or Honing: Brass is often used for decorative purposes, in part because of the wide range of colors naturally found in different brass alloys. Polishing brass produces a very smooth and shiny surface, making it ideal for aesthetically pleasing components.

Post-processing: Brass is easy to machine, so its freshly machined surface often has an attractive appearance, even without additional processing. Therefore, in many cases, the machined part can be used directly. The surface finish can be further improved through additional finishing processes.

Cost-saving design tips

Brass is a relatively expensive material, so it is advisable to optimize its use. Here are some design tips:
Design for Manufacturing (DFM): Although brass is easy to machine, following applicable DFM principles can improve efficiency and reduce costs. Make sure the design considers practical feasibility during machining and avoids complex shapes and unnecessary details.
Reduce machine setups: When designing a part, try to minimize the number of machine setups required. This not only saves time, but also reduces machining costs. Simplifying the design helps improve production efficiency.
