What is CNC machining?
CNC machining is a manufacturing technology that removes material using computer-input instructions called G-code. It primarily falls into two basic machine tool types:
Rotary tool cutting: In this case, the tool rotates and cuts the stationary workpiece material.
Stationary tool cutting: In this process, the tool remains stationary while the workpiece material rotates.
Based on these two basic working principles, more complex CNC machine tools have been built, enabling them to handle various materials and perform complex machining operations. CNC machining is renowned for its high precision and efficiency and is widely used in many industries, including machinery manufacturing and aerospace.
How does CNC machining work?
CNC machine tools come in various configurations, but they all follow the same basic working principle: specialized software translates a 3D model into a set of instructions needed by the CNC machine to manufacture the final part. These instructions are written using a computer language called G-code. Once the machine is running, the entire process typically requires no human intervention, except for loading raw materials, unloading finished products, and possibly repositioning or securing workpieces to allow the machine to reach previously inaccessible areas.
What materials are used in CNC machining?
CNC machining is an excellent manufacturing technology capable of handling a wide variety of materials, including:
Metals: This is one of the most commonly used materials; almost all metals are suitable for CNC machining. From easily machinable brass to nickel-chromium alloys, a variety of products, such as shafts and gears, can be cut.
Plastics: While injection molding is commonly used for manufacturing plastic products, certain components, such as valve bodies and bushings made of ABS, nylon, and polycarbonate, can also be manufactured using CNC machining.
Wood: CNC machining is frequently used for shaping wood, primarily for decorative purposes rather than practicality.
Foam: Closed-cell or open-cell polyurethane foam can be cut using CNC machine tools and is commonly used in applications such as packaging inside toolboxes.
Composite Materials: Composite materials such as glass fiber, carbon fiber, and aramid can also be cut using CNC machine tools, but due to their higher tool wear, tool life may be shortened.
