Precision in Milling Machining
The precision of a milling machine varies considerably due to factors such as machine design, component quality (especially guideways), and operator skill. For many standard milling machines, positioning accuracy can range from millimeters (0.001 inch or 0.0254 mm) to tens of thousands of inches (0.0001 inch or 0.00254 mm).
Repeatability refers to a machine's ability to consistently return to a specific position. Repeatability may vary between machines, but in well-maintained equipment, it is generally considered to be around 0.001 inches.
Generally, tolerances are expected to be within a few thousandths of an inch, but higher quality machines and skilled operators can achieve even higher tolerances. In all screw feeds (whether manual or CNC), there is a certain degree of hysteresis (or slack motion), so the direction of motion must be considered before cutting begins to ensure any slack is absorbed, thereby improving machining accuracy.
Are milling machines accurate?
Yes, milling machines are generally considered high-value assets, possessing precise tolerances and low hysteresis, especially in their linear and rotary positioning systems. Based on these, the best milling machines are considered among the most precise instruments used to manufacture machines. However, their operation and maintenance significantly impact accuracy and repeatability in specific tasks, as well as their ability to maintain these standards over the long term.
Improper operation or maintenance of a milling machine can lead to parts produced with poor accuracy and repeatability. Therefore, proper operation and regular maintenance are crucial to ensuring milling machine performance and producing high-quality parts.
What is the difference between milling and taper turning?
Milling has evolved into a multi-axis machining method, blurring the lines between it and other machining methods/equipment. Modern 5+ axis CNC milling machines can perform turning operations as part of their standard programming, with the workpiece fixed in a rotating chuck and presented to a rotating or stationary tool to complete a full circumferential cut. Similarly, 3.5 axis CNC machines can perform parallel cuts on tapered (assuming cylindrical) contours, maintaining the cylindrical shape by adjusting the tilt of the tool holder or brush.
Taper turning is typically performed on a lathe, where the workpiece rotates in a chuck while a stationary tool is angled to the machine spindle to cut the tapered cylindrical surface. This process usually involves setting the lathe's compound slide to achieve the desired angle for cutting, but can also be achieved through the coordinated movement of the longitudinal and transverse axes of the tool movement on a CNC lathe.
