Thread Types and Processing
The spiral threads you see every day come in many different types, depending on their location, purpose, and material. This time, we'll explain metal threads produced through cutting.
External threads: Cut on the outside, such as in bolts.
Internal threads: Cut on the inside, such as in nuts.
While all screws have threads, you can distinguish them by their outer or inner diameter.
A thread consists of spiraling triangular grooves, with the spacing between these grooves called the pitch. Despite their similar appearance, there are many different thread types, including metric threads, parallel pipe threads, tapered pipe threads, unified threads, Whitworth threads, and trapezoidal threads.
The size of a thread is called the"nominal diameter"and is typically indicated by a symbol following the numerical value, indicating the thread type. For example, a metric thread might be designated as M30 x P1.5. This means:

Threading Methods
The outer diameter of the thread is typically cut to a large diameter, followed by a threading tool to cut the smaller diameter. During the turning process, the thread is cut in several passes at appropriate depth increments to complete the entire process.
Roller cutting: The thread is formed into the workpiece using a roller tool.
Die cutting: The thread form is pressed into the material using a die.
Planetary tap cutting: The thread is cut using a rotating planetary tap, suitable for high-precision applications.

Internal Threading Methods
The inside diameter is typically cut to a minor diameter, then cut to the major diameter using an internal threading tool. Similar to external threading, internal threads are cut in several passes, with appropriate depth increments.
Tapping is commonly used for small-diameter internal threads. It is a common method that uses rotation and feed to cut threads into the material.
Because external threads are cut on the surface, the process is visible to the operator. However, internal threads are cut inside the material, making it difficult to observe and handle chips. Therefore, internal threads are more difficult to process than external threads, requiring greater precision and skill.
