Overview: What is CNC Turning?

CNC Lathe Basics

A CNC lathe, also known as a live die lathe, is ideal for machining any symmetrical cylindrical or spherical part. Typically, a lathe rotates the workpiece on a vertical or horizontal axis while a fixed forming tool moves along a linear path around the workpiece, cutting it. This process of cutting a workpiece on a CNC lathe is called turning.

How CNC turning works

A CNC lathe uses subtractive machining to create the desired shape. After the G-code is generated, a blank bar of stock is loaded into the lathe spindle's chuck. As the spindle rotates, the chuck holds the workpiece securely in place. Once the spindle reaches the set speed, a stationary tool engages the workpiece and begins removing material until the desired geometry is achieved.

A variety of operations can be performed on a live tool lathe, including facing, threading, knurling, drilling, boring, reaming, and taper turning. Different operations often require tooling changes, which can result in increased costs and setup time.

After all machining operations are completed, the parts are cut from stock for further post-processing. After this, the CNC lathe is ready to repeat the operation with almost no wasted setup time.

Types of CNC Lathes

There are many types of lathes, but the most common are two-axis CNC lathes and Swiss-type lathes. Swiss-type lathes are unique in that the stock material is fed through a guide bushing, allowing the tool to cut closer to the fulcrum. This design is particularly suitable for long, slender CNC lathe parts and micromachining.

Some Swiss-type lathes are also equipped with a second tool head, acting as a CNC milling machine, capable of performing multiple machining operations without transferring the workpiece to another machine. This feature makes Swiss-type lathes very cost-effective for machining complex parts.

Benefits of CNC Turning

Similar to CNC milling machines, CNC lathes can be easily set up for high repeatability, making them ideal for a wide range of products, from rapid prototyping to low- and high-volume production.

Multi-axis CNC turning centers and Swiss-type lathes are capable of performing multiple machining operations on a single machine, making them an affordable option for machining complex geometries without the need for multiple machines or frequent tool changes required on traditional CNC milling machines.
