Hongsinn Gear Cutting Services

Hongsinn offers the highest quality gear hobbing services, offering a full range of tooth profiles, meshing configurations, and ratios, customized to precisely meet your needs. We specialize in CNC manufacturing of gear"blanks"and precision cutting and shaping of gear teeth to create functional gears for your application. Our gear cutting services utilize the most appropriate technology to ensure the desired gear teeth perfectly match the desired profile and dimensions.

What is gear hobbing?

Gear hobbing is a common gear cutting process that utilizes a hobbing machine and multi-point hobbing cutting tools to create precise and repeatable pinion teeth. This efficient and accurate process is suitable for producing cylindrical, spur, helical, and helical gears. Hobbing ensures high gear precision and consistency, meeting the demands of a wide range of applications.

The gear hobbing process begins on a gear hobbing machine. This process involves a rotating spindle holding the gear blank (workpiece) and a hobbing tool mounted on a movable carriage. The tool moves perpendicular to the axis of the gear blank (for spur gears) or at the desired meshing angle (for bevel gears).

Depending on the complexity of the required tooth profile, the rotating tool can be fed along its axis, along the radial axis of the blank, or in conjunction with both axes. For helical and curved bevel gear teeth, the relationship between the rotation of the blank and the rotation of the hobbing gear is more complex.

Gear hobbing tools are available with all standard gear profiles, selected based on the gear type and specification, specifically tooth size, tooth profile, and helix angle. This ensures that the cut gear meets the precise design requirements.

Cost-Effectiveness

The equipment used to perform gear hobbing is relatively simple and low-cost. Even with CNC control, these machines are easy to set up and operate. While the tools used for gear hobbing are relatively expensive, they have a long service life because they respond well to sharpening (especially when made of steel). Furthermore, these tools are well-suited to carbide inserts, which improves cutting efficiency and durability, making them excellent performers in modern manufacturing.

Fast and Continuous

Gear hobbing is a fast-turnaround process that enables high-volume production and supports nearly hands-off automation. Multiple blanks can be processed simultaneously on a single machine axis, enabling true batch production. This technology, nearly as old as the hobbing machine itself, remains effective, ensuring efficient and consistent production.

Shortened Production Cycle Time

Gear hobbing typically has a shorter cycle time than most alternative tooth cutting processes. This productivity is significantly increased by stacking multiple blanks, further reducing overall production cycle time. This efficient processing method helps manufacturers quickly meet market demands and achieve fast delivery times.

Extensive Capabilities

The flexibility of the gear hobbing process allows the same basic tool to quickly switch from machining simple iron spur gears to aluminum-bronze davit gears with only a brief reset. A wide range of material, size, profile, and tooth shape options can be achieved with simple setup adjustments on the same equipment, effectively utilizing the same skills and equipment resources.
