X-Y-Z Axis Cutting and Planing
X-Y-Z axis cutting and planing, often simply referred to as XY cutting, refers to the rapid and precise machining of flat plates using a cutting table equipped with a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) system. The CNC system controls the movement of the cutting torch along the X and Y axes, while the height control system adjusts the Z-axis (vertical) movement to ensure the torch or cutting head maintains the optimal distance from the material.
While many people first think of CNC plasma cutting machines (sometimes called computerized plasma cutting machines), cutting is not limited to plasma processes. Laser cutting, waterjet cutting, and oxy-fuel cutting are also applicable manufacturing processes.
Regardless of the cutting method you choose, cutting tables are available in various sizes and prices.
The smallest cutting tables typically use a standard personal computer as the CNC system (including CNC plasma cutting machines, laser cutting machines, waterjet cutting machines, or oxy-fuel cutting machines) and can be as small as 2 feet x 2 feet. What factors should be considered when choosing a small CNC plasma cutting table?
High-performance industrial CNC plasma cutting tables (as well as waterjet, laser, and oxygen cutting tables) can reach 100 feet in length and typically feature multiple torches mounted on one or more gantry frames, suitable for mass production and manufacturing.
Linear Cutting and Planing
Linear cutting and planing are used to perform long, straight cuts or planing operations. These processes are typically less precise and time-consuming when performed manually. Linear cutting is often used on-site when the size or shape of the material to be processed is unsuitable for an X-Y table.
Automating these processes using portable linear cutting machines can significantly improve productivity and achieve more uniform cutting or planing results. While these devices were originally designed for oxyacetylene torches, many suppliers today produce linear cutting machines that can also meet the high-speed requirements of plasma cutting and adapt to a wider range of processing needs.
