Stainless steel is a general term for a range of steels that are corrosion resistant and contain at least 10.5% chromium. This minimum chromium content forms a chromium oxide layer on the surface, which creates a self-healing oxygen barrier, thereby preventing further oxidation. When the chromium content is below 10.5%, the oxide film is not durable enough to heal itself, causing the steel to rust more easily.
Stainless steel is used in a wide range of industries, including construction, marine, aerospace, automotive and consumer products. The material's high strength, durability and superior corrosion resistance make it an ideal choice for many consumer products and outdoor environment components. Stainless steel is classified into different grades based on its alloy composition, and choosing the right grade usually depends on a variety of factors, including the use environment, the required strength and durability, and aesthetic standards.
What Is Stainless Steel?
Stainless steel is primarily made from low- to medium-carbon steels, and its properties are modified by alloying with a range of metals. For example, chromium and nickel enhance its corrosion resistance and hardness. Other metals improve properties such as ductility, toughness, and tensile and shear strength. Stainless steels are generally high-strength, with some types exhibiting the highest tensile and yield strengths of all metals. Depending on the grade and alloy type, stainless steels also often exhibit excellent corrosion resistance in certain environments.Additionally, stainless steels are capable of high- and low-temperature performance, from cryogenic temperatures to 2,000 °C, depending on grade.

History of Stainless Steel
The history of stainless steel began in 1912 when British metallurgist Harry Brearley was conducting research at Brown Firth Laboratories in Sheffield, aiming to improve wear-resistant steel for gun barrels. During his experiments, some alloys showed strong corrosion resistance, which made him realize the wider significance of his work. Brearley began to experiment with different steel compositions, and eventually found that the addition of chromium had the greatest impact on corrosion resistance, which laid the foundation for the birth of stainless steel.
Brearley patented his new alloy in 1915 under the name"rustless steel", a name later changed to stainless steel. The owners of the research laboratory were Sheffield steel manufacturers, who were known for producing weapons and cutlery. It was in this market that the first applications for stainless steel were developed, taking advantage of the strength of the new alloy. Stainless steel was also used for military purposes during World War I, such as aircraft engines and parts.
Stainless steel is now a staple material in most industrial sectors, including electrical appliances, medical devices, automotive parts and construction materials. Its excellent corrosion resistance, combined with its strength and durability, has made it an increasingly popular choice in many industries.
