What are machined parts?

Machined parts are ubiquitous in modern manufacturing, ranging from tiny metal fasteners to aircraft engine components; a wide variety of parts are manufactured through machining. So, what exactly is machining, and what is the part being machined?
Whenwe talk about machined parts, we're not just referring to objects made using machinery, but specifically to parts machined by cutting machines (such as milling machines, lathes, and drilling machines). While these machines operate differently, their fundamental purpose is the same: to use sharp cutting tools to carve specific portions from a piece of material called a workpiece.
The machining process can be manual, where experienced machinists manually operate machines, such as milling machines, to cut the workpiece into the desired shape. It can also be digital, in which case CNC machine tools automatically cut parts according to computer instructions. Today, the vast majority of complex or custom-made machined parts are manufactured using CNC machine tools, although machinists still cautiously choose to perform certain tasks manually, as this can be more efficient than creating digital designs and programming.
Machined parts can be metal or plastic, and in some cases, even other materials, but must be made from a material that can be cut without easily deforming. Sometimes, parts are manufactured using other processes (such as casting or molding) and then machined later to add details or features. These types of parts can be described as partially machined parts or post-machined parts.

Why Use Machined Parts?

Companies, product designers, R&D departments, and other professionals choose to use machined parts for many reasons. Here are some key advantages:
Superior Strength: Made from solid materials, machined parts possess exceptional strength, making them outstanding in a wide range of applications.
Variety of Shapes and Thicknesses: These parts can be manufactured in a variety of shapes and thicknesses to meet diverse design needs, easily achieving everything from simple components to complex precision parts.
Fine Features: Machining processes allow for highly detailed features, making components more precisely suited to specific functional requirements.
Wide Material Selection: Machined parts can be made from a variety of materials, such as metals and plastics, providing greater design flexibility.
Rapid Manufacturing: Small batches of machined parts can be produced quickly because they do not rely on complex tooling or molds; even at reduced machining speeds, tolerances remain very tight.
Reliable Manufacturing Technology: Machining is a proven manufacturing technique that has been an industry standard for decades, making machined parts more likely to meet industry-specific standards and certifications.
