How does milling work?

At its most basic level, milling removes material from a workpiece by rotating a cutting tool made of hardened steel or other materials. The tool typically moves along the fixed X-Y axes, but can be adjusted to the Z-axis as needed. A 3-axis milling machine is the most basic option, but 4-axis, 5-axis, and even 7-axis machines are also available on the market.
The process begins with loading the workpiece, which is then secured to the worktable using clamps such as vises to prevent accidental movement, shifting, or damage during machining.
Next, appropriate cutting tools are selected for the material and project being processed. Then, the machine needs to be set up, and the spindle speed and depth of cut adjusted. Once these preparations are complete, milling can begin.
This process can be automated or manual, but either way, careful and meticulous work is required to achieve the desired finished product. First, excess material is removed through deep cuts, giving the workpiece a rough final shape. Next, semi-finishing is performed using slower and shallower cuts, and finally, a full finish is done to ensure the part meets specifications.
Once milling is complete, the workpiece needs to be removed. Typically, the machine is also cleaned during this step. After unloading, the dimensions and surface quality of the parts are checked to ensure they meet requirements. Finally, some post-processing may be necessary, which could include deburring, heat treatment, surface coating, and storage.

What is the purpose of milling in manufacturing?

Milling is primarily used in the manufacturing industry to remove material from a workpiece. This process allows manufacturers to shape raw materials into specific forms, creating parts with desired dimensions and geometry. Milling machines can also achieve very tight tolerances and high precision, which is particularly critical in industries such as aerospace and medical device manufacturing, where extremely high accuracy is required.
Furthermore, milling can provide a wide range of surface finishes, from rough to highly polished, depending on the cutting tools and machining parameters used. It can create complex 3D shapes, contours, and features that may be difficult or impossible to achieve with other machining methods. CNC milling machines, in particular, can produce large quantities of identical parts with extremely high repeatability.
Milling can also be applied to a variety of materials, including metals, plastics, and composites, providing flexibility and versatility to the manufacturing industry.
