What is CNC machining?

CNC, short for"computer numerical control,"is a manufacturing process that uses programmed computers to instruct equipment and tools. This process can control a variety of complex machines, such as CNC milling machines, CNC lathes, CNC laser machines, water jet machines, and electrical discharge machines (EDMs), to perform three-dimensional cutting tasks.

How CNC Machining Works

After activating the CNC system, the product file is programmed into the software and assigned to the appropriate tools and machinery. These tools and machinery then perform the designated cutting tasks. The CNC machining process includes the following stages:

Designing the CAD Model
Create a computer-aided design (CAD) model of the product.

Converting the CAD File to a CNC Program
Convert the CAD file into program code that can be understood by the CNC machine.

Preparing the CNC Machine
Set up and calibrate the machine to ensure it can accurately perform the machining task.

CNC Machining Operations
Start the machining process, and the machine will perform cutting and machining according to the programmed instructions.
Processing
CNC Turning, CNC Milling, Laser Cutting, Bending, Spinning, Wire Cutting, Stamping, Electric Discharge Machining (EDM), Injection Molding

Main CNC Machining Processes

CNC Milling

Removes material from a workpiece using a multi-point rotary tool. A basic milling machine consists of a three-axis system (X, Y, and Z), and it remains one of the most popular and widely used machining processes. In three-axis machining, the workpiece remains stationary while the rotary tool performs cutting along the X, Y, and Z axes.

Four-Axis and Five-Axis CNC Machining

Most newer milling machines can accommodate two additional axes, offering greater versatility. They are often used in the production of high-precision parts and are capable of performing more complex cutting tasks, resulting in improved efficiency and accuracy.

CNC Turning

CNC turning is the process of removing material from a rotating workpiece using a single-point cutting tool. In CNC turning, a CNC machine tool, typically a lathe, feeds the tool in a linear motion along the surface of the rotating workpiece, removing material around the circumference until the desired diameter is reached. Most CNC lathes are equipped with X- and Z-axes for precise machining.
