Non-weldable aluminum base metals (arc welding)

Some aluminum base metals are considered"non-weldable"because they have a high susceptibility to solidification cracking and increased susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking when welded. These base metals are not suitable for arc welding.
The following are some aluminum base metals with these susceptibility and susceptibility:
6262 and 2011: These alloys are primarily used in screw compressor stock applications. They have small amounts of lead, bismuth, and/or tin added to improve machinability, but the addition of these low-melting-point metals also significantly increases their susceptibility to solidification cracking. Therefore, these alloys are typically mechanically fastened rather than welded.
2xxx series (containing aluminum, copper, and magnesium alloys, used in aerospace and other high-performance applications): e.g., 2017 and 2024. These alloys are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking, cracking, and premature failure when arc welded. It should be noted that some 2xxx series alloys (such as 2219) do not contain magnesium and are considered weldable.
7xxx series (aluminum-zinc-copper-magnesium alloys used in aerospace and other high-performance applications): such as 7075, 7178, 7050, and 7150. These alloys may also suffer from stress corrosion, cracking, and premature failure during arc welding. However, some 7xxx series alloys (such as 7005) do not contain copper and are considered weldable.
Friction stir welding (FSW) is currently being used to weld certain non-weldable base metals such as aluminum. This process is performed at a lower temperature than arc welding, and the aluminum does not melt during the welding process, thus eliminating the problems caused by solidification.
