What is metal forming?

Sheet metal forming is one of the most critical processes in part processing and manufacturing. During sheet metal forming, the metal is reshaped while remaining in a solid state. The malleability of certain metals allows them to be deformed into the desired shape without losing their structural integrity. Metal stamping, extrusion, press braking, rolling, forging, and laser cutting are some of the more common forming processes.

Metal Stamping Process
Metal stamping utilizes a press to stamp, form, and cut metal sheets, with the metal fed from either above or below. Custom designs can be created on metal workpieces using metal stamping tools and corresponding dies. The punching process involves cutting a hole in the metal. After the workpiece is clamped into the die, a punch and die are inserted to cut the metal sheet into the desired shape. While some presses are still manually operated, most modern presses use CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines. Stamping is an efficient and economical high-volume metalworking process.

Extrusion Process
Extrusion is the process of expanding metal and reducing its diameter by forcing it through a narrow opening with a constant or varying cross-section. After the metal workpiece is pushed through the opening, the die opens. Hot or cold extrusion processes can be used. Extrusion can produce a range of products, including tubes, cans, shafts, cups, and gears. Extrusion can also be classified as forward extrusion and backward extrusion. In forward extrusion, the workpiece moves in the same direction as the punch, while in backward extrusion, the punch moves in the opposite direction to the workpiece.

Sheet Metal Bending
Sheet metal bending is a very common process used not only to form shapes and increase the rigidity of parts, but also to form seams, corrugations, and flanges. Press braking is a sheet metal forming process that involves bending a workpiece. When bending stress is applied, the metal sheet is bent until it deforms into the desired shape and no longer returns to its original state. This technique is used to manufacture parts such as flanges and corrugations.

Roll Forming
Roll forming is the bending of sheet metal through a series of operations. A roll forming line feeds the steel sheet through a series of roll stations. Roller dies are located on both sides of the sheet at each station. The rollers can be positioned at different angles to the sheet. Bending and deformation of the workpiece are achieved by forcing the sheet through the roller dies. Rolling can be classified according to the temperature of the workpiece, including hot rolling and cold rolling. Metal above the recrystallization temperature is called hot rolling, while metal below the recrystallization temperature is called cold rolling.
