Laser Cutting Steel

Laser cutting steel requires a machine capable of operating at high power settings. For stainless steel and other steel alloys, CO2 lasers and fiber lasers are commonly used due to their ability to achieve high-power cutting.
Relationship between Cutting Thickness and Power
In laser cutting, the thickness of the steel plate is directly related to the power required for cutting. For steel thicker than 20 mm, Nd:YAG lasers are generally not suitable, but their cutting capabilities can be improved by combining them with oxygen assist gas and fiber enhancers.
Laser Cutting Metals
One of the main advantages of laser cutting is that it can cut almost any type of metal, including metals of various thicknesses. Metal materials are ductile, malleable, and reflective, while also possessing high thermal and electrical conductivity. CNC laser cutting machines can cut a variety of metal materials, including:
Stainless steel
Mild steel
Cold-rolled steel
Aluminum
Titanium
Brass
Copper

Laser Cutting Aluminum

Laser cutting is an ideal choice for cutting aluminum due to its ability to achieve minimal burrs, high speed, and excellent cutting precision. The difficulty of cutting mainly depends on the grade of aluminum; higher grades of aluminum, containing more alloying elements, are relatively easier to cut.
Cutting Challenges
Aluminum's strong natural reflectivity means that the laser beam can bounce off the aluminum surface, potentially damaging the laser cutting machine. This problem is particularly pronounced when cutting pure aluminum. Highly reflective aluminum materials affect CO2 lasers because their wavelengths are not ideal for cutting non-ferrous metals and are more susceptible to reflection.
Advantages of Aluminum Alloys
Aluminum alloys are typically mixed with other metals (such as magnesium and copper), which reduces their reflectivity, making them easier to cut with industrial CNC laser cutting machines.
Best Choice
Fiber laser cutting machines are the best choice for cutting aluminum because they have the ability to handle reflective materials while providing high power output. Compared to CO2 lasers, fiber lasers are more efficient and reliable when cutting aluminum, meeting the requirements for high power output and ensuring a smooth cutting process.

Secondary Processing of Laser-Cut CNC Parts

Many CAD model designers utilize secondary processing workflows for laser-cut parts, including metal bending, tapping, and surface finishing. These processes play a crucial role in part fabrication, enhancing both the functionality and appearance of the finished product.
1. Metal Bending
During the design phase, CAD model designers can clearly indicate the bending locations and required angles in the design files of laser-cut parts. These instructions ensure that the parts meet design specifications during the bending process after production. Once completed, the parts are typically sent to a hydraulic press brake for precise bending.
2. Tapping
Similarly, tapping instructions can also be included in the design files, ensuring that threaded holes can be quickly processed after cutting, facilitating subsequent assembly.
3. Surface Finishing
For most materials used in laser cutting, a variety of surface finishing processes are also possible, such as:
Anodizing
Powder coating
Painting
Polishing
Media blasting
These surface treatments not only improve the aesthetics of the parts but also add functionality, such as enhanced corrosion resistance or a uniform appearance.
