What is sheet metal laser cutting?

Sheet metal laser cutting is a crucial subtractive manufacturing process that modifies parts by cutting and removing material. This method utilizes a laser beam to cut the workpiece and is one of the standard machining techniques. Laser cutting technology relies on computer numerical control (CNC) technology, which ensures its excellent cutting precision. Before performing CNC cutting or laser cutting, the operator needs to input the detailed design or pattern's code or program into the computer.

Sheet Metal Laser Cutting Process
Sheet metal laser cutting involves using a laser beam to melt metals and their alloys, resulting in a smooth and sharp cut. The process consists of two synchronized operations:
Laser Beam Focusing and Material Absorption
The material absorbs the focused laser beam, which is the energy source for cutting.
Cutting Nozzle Provides Process Gas
The cutting nozzle is concentric with the laser and provides the necessary process gas. The gas not only protects the processing head from vapor and spatter but also helps remove excess material from the cut.

Three Main Methods of Laser Cutting

Laser Beam Melting Cutting
This method uses an inert gas (mainly nitrogen). The molten material is blown out of the cut by the inert gas, while simultaneously preventing oxidation of the cutting edges. It is suitable for cutting flat, thin aluminum alloys and stainless steel sheets, especially in applications where aesthetics are important and minimal post-processing is required.
Laser Beam Sublimation Cutting
This method causes the material to vaporize directly, rather than melt. The process of a material changing from a solid to a gas is called sublimation. Similar to melting cutting, it also uses an inert gas to blow the material vapor out of the cut, thus avoiding oxidation. It is commonly used for cutting organic materials such as wood, leather, and textiles.
Laser Flame Cutting
This method uses a combustible gas (such as oxygen) to blow out the molten material. After the laser heats the workpiece to melt it, the oxygen provides more energy through an oxidation reaction, promoting the cutting process. This is an ideal method for cutting low-carbon steel and easily fusible materials (such as ceramics), but it may cause burning of the cutting surface, so process parameters need to be optimized to prevent burr formation.
