Characteristics and Applications of Plastics

Plastics are materials made from synthetic or semi-synthetic compounds, possessing good ductility and the ability to be shaped. Most plastics on the market are fully synthetic, typically derived from petrochemicals. However, with increasing environmental awareness, plastics made from renewable materials such as polylactic acid (PLA) are gaining popularity.

Due to their low cost, ease of manufacture, versatility, and water resistance, plastics are widely used in various products and fields, including 3D printing. The versatility of plastics makes them play an important role in daily life, meeting the needs of various products. Choosing the appropriate type of plastic can effectively improve product performance and sustainability.

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is one of the most commonly used plastics in industry, with widespread applications across multiple sectors. It is the primary material for Lego bricks and is also widely used in automotive bodies, home appliances, and many roofing applications.

ABS belongs to the thermoplastic family and is a polybutadiene-based elastomer, which makes it highly flexible and impact-resistant. Due to its excellent properties, ABS is primarily used in fused layer dermal transfer (FDM) technology, making it ideal for most desktop 3D printers. Furthermore, ABS can also exist in resin form, making it suitable for SLA or material jetting processes.

The versatility and durability of this plastic make it widely popular in manufacturing and design. Choosing ABS can provide products with high quality and a long service life.

PLA (Polylactic Acid)
Unlike ABS, polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable plastic because it is made from renewable raw materials such as corn starch. A key characteristic of PLA is its low shrinkage rate, which eliminates the need for a heated build plate during 3D printing. Printing temperatures should be controlled between 190°C and 230°C for optimal results.

ASA (Acrylonitrile-Styrene Acrylate)
ASA has similar properties to ABS but offers better UV resistance. Some complications may occur during printing, so using a hot plate is recommended to improve print quality. Printing parameters are very similar to ABS, but caution must be exercised when using ASA with enclosed 3D printers or printing outdoors due to styrene emissions. Parts printed with ASA are stable and very durable.

PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), primarily found in single-use plastic bottles, is an ideal 3D printing material for objects that come into contact with food. PET is a semi-rigid material with good compressive strength. For optimal printing results, the printing temperature should be between 75°C and 90°C.

PET is typically sold in the form of semi-transparent filaments and comes in various varieties such as PETG, PETE, and PETT. It does not release odors during the printing process and is 100% recyclable. Choosing materials such as PLA, ASA, or PET can meet diverse application needs and contribute to sustainable development.

High-Performance Plastics (PEEK, PEKK, ULTEM)

The continuous development of 3D printing technology has spurred extensive research into new printing materials, leading to the development of a range of high-performance filaments. These materials possess mechanical properties similar to metals, making them suitable for a variety of demanding applications.

Common High-Performance Plastics
PEEK (Polyetheretherketone): Possesses extremely high mechanical strength and heat resistance, suitable for extreme environmental conditions.
PEKK (Polyetherketoneketone): Similar to PEEK, offering excellent chemical resistance and thermal stability.
ULTEM (Polyetherimide): Renowned for its high-temperature performance and excellent electrical insulation.

These plastics belong to the polyaryletherketone (PAEK) and polyetherimide (PEI) families, exhibiting very high mechanical and thermal resistance while being significantly lighter than metals. These properties make them highly attractive in aerospace, automotive, and medical fields.
Printing Requirements

High-performance polymers can be printed using several commercially available FDM printers. It's important to note that a 3D printer must meet the following requirements:

A hot plate capable of reaching at least 230°C
Capable of extruding to 350°C

A closed printing cavity. Currently, approximately 65% of these materials are manufactured using FDM technology, but they can also be supplied in powder form, compatible with selective laser sintering (SLS). This makes high-performance plastics highly flexible and efficient in demanding industrial applications. Choosing these materials will provide your projects with superior performance and reliability.
