What is SLS?

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is currently the most commonly used powder bed fusion 3D printing system. It is an additive manufacturing (AM) technology that creates objects by building (printing) layer by layer. Based on a 3D computer drawing, a high-powered laser manufactures parts layer by layer on a preheated powder bed. The laser melts the powder particles, and the powder bed supports the product during manufacturing, eliminating the need for internal product structure support.

During the SLS process, the powder bed is equipped with a roller system that evenly distributes a thin layer of powder before sintering. The finished product must cool, and any loose powder must be removed in a post-printing cleaning process. Any remaining unsintered powder can be used in the next production run, making SLS a zero-waste technology.

SLS is ideal for rapid prototyping, small-batch production, and custom manufacturing, especially excelling in complex geometries, including thin walls, cutouts, reverse dimensions, tapered shapes, and other complex design features.

What is Metal SLS 3D Printing?

Metal SLS 3D printing is a widely used additive manufacturing process that offers exceptional precision and the ability to print complex geometries while providing mechanical properties similar to injection-molded parts. This process is ideal for functional prototyping and small-batch production.

SLS-printed parts can be made from a variety of materials, including nylon, polymers, ceramics, and metals. While these printed parts are similar in strength to standard metal parts, they are much lighter. SLS printing systems are often associated with plastic-based materials such as carbon fiber nylon and aluminum nylon, which are also lightweight, high-performance materials.

These materials not only offer greater strength but also exhibit a metallic appearance while maintaining a lighter weight. Nylon, along with carbon fiber and aluminum, is often used as an alternative to metal parts for a variety of applications, including jigs, fixtures, tools, and functional prototyping.

Furthermore, SLS printers can also print aluminum and stainless steel alloys through a derivative process called Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS). This process is also known as Selective Laser Melting (SLM), although the printing process is the same, a different material is used.

Types of Polycarbonate

While you can choose to use plain polycarbonate for 3D printing, there are several blends available that offer different properties and advantages. Here are some common types of polycarbonate:
1. Polycarbonate (PC)
This pure form of polycarbonate is the preferred material because of its excellent strength and resistance to heat, shock, and abrasion.

2. Polycarbonate/ABS Blend
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is a popular 3D printing material, and you can also find blends of polycarbonate and ABS. This material is both economical and offers considerable strength, making it suitable for a variety of applications.

3. Polycarbonate/Carbon Fiber Composites
If you need the heat resistance of polycarbonate while also wanting higher strength and stiffness, consider this blend. It combines the thermoplastic properties of polycarbonate with the reinforcing effect of carbon fiber.

4. Polycarbonate/Flame Retardant Blend
For applications that may be affected by flames, fires, or extreme temperatures, this polycarbonate blend offers better heat resistance and is less prone to flammability in flames. It enhances the properties of polycarbonate through flame retardant additives.

5. Polycarbonate/Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) Blends Warpage is a major issue with polycarbonate. To prevent this, filaments blended with PEG can be used. This material is particularly suitable for geometries with complex details or those prone to deformation.
