Simultaneous 5 Axis Machining or 3+2 Axis Machining
5-axis CNC machines can differ from one another in another important way. Some 5-axis machines use what is known as “simultaneous” 5-axis machining, while others employ a “3+2-axis” method.
Simultaneous 5-axis
Simultaneous (or continuous) 5-axis machining is a form of 5-axis machining in which the machine can continually adjust movement on all five axes without pause. Simultaneous 5-axis CNC can be very fast, since there are no breaks between passes of the cutting tool.

This method allows for high-speed operation as there are no pauses between passes of the cutting tool, enabling efficient and precise manufacturing processes.
3+2-axis
Another form of 5-axis machining is 3+2-axis, where the machine operates on the 4th and 5th axes to adjust the cutting tool angle when it's not moving along the X, Y, and Z axes. While this method may be slower than simultaneous 5-axis CNC, it can yield more robust parts and prolong tool life due to reduced stress during machining.
5-axis CNC machines can feature different configurations, with the two primary types being trunnion-style and swivel-rotate-style machines.
Trunnion-style machines utilize a moving table to adjust the workpiece angle, offering advantages like improved undercut access and enhanced material removal capabilities. On the other hand, swivel-rotate-style machines employ a rotating spindle with a B-axis and C-axis, allowing for varied cutting angles while maintaining a stationary table.
These machines excel in handling heavy parts and reducing chatter with shorter cutting tools, resulting in heightened precision.
