PLA (Polylactic Acid) Filament
PLA (Polylactic Acid) filament is one of the most commonly used materials in fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing, widely popular for its ease of use and aesthetically pleasing appearance. In the history of plastics, PLA can be considered one of the pioneering materials. Invented in 1938 by DuPont chemist Wallace Carothers (coincidentally, he also invented nylon), it only gradually became mainstream later.
What is PLA 3D Printing Material?
Polylactic acid (PLA) is a thermoplastic polymer, typically produced by fermenting plant products such as sugarcane or corn starch to generate lactic acid, which is then polymerized into PLA, usually using lactide. PLA can be mixed with nucleating agents or plasticizers (such as polyethylene glycol) to modify its properties. Furthermore, PLA can be blended with other materials, such as wood fibers, carbon, metal flakes, and graphene, to further enhance its properties.
PLA Classification
PLA: Polylactic acid with a simple composition, close to a pure polymer, may contain a limited number of additives to modify intramolecular flexibility, melt viscosity, color, or visual properties.
PLA+: This type of PLA may contain a variety of additives, including:
Carbon fiber: Used to improve the stability, stiffness, and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the model.
Wood fiber: Used for aesthetic effects.
Graphene: Used to enhance stiffness and improve UTS.
Metal particles: Used to add visual effects.
Limitations of PLA 3D Printing
While polylactic acid (PLA) is an ideal material for short-term cosmetic models, it has some limitations:
Limited applicability: PLA is suitable for manufacturing parts that do not withstand high stress and have moderate dimensional accuracy, but it is not suitable for engineering test pieces, part assemblies, or parts that need to withstand wear.
Poor durability: PLA is not suitable for outdoor use, humid environments, or any exposure to chemicals. Its poor durability under harsh conditions may lead to part failure.
Environmental disposal issues: Although PLA is often considered a"green"alternative, it is not suitable for environmental disposal. PLA requires separate sorting and is only biodegradable under commercial composting conditions.
Heat sensitivity: PLA is prone to deformation in high-temperature environments and is not suitable for applications requiring high-temperature resistance.
